A major power outage has struck Launceston’s CBD and surrounding suburbs, forcing businesses to shut their doors.
More than 1,200 customers have been affected by the blackout, which hit the central business district and nearby areas around 6:02pm.
The outage has impacted East Launceston, Launceston CBD and South Launceston, with TasNetworks reporting 1,192 properties without power in those areas.
A separate outage is also affecting 84 customers in Newstead, where emergency repairs are underway.

The technical disruption extended to local media, with 7 Tasmania’s evening news broadcast cut off when their Launceston studio lost power.
TasNetworks has not provided a specific cause for the main outage, listing only that crews are currently inspecting the network.

The power distributor initially advised customers to check for updates after 8:00PM regarding restoration times.
For the Newstead outage, the company cited “emergency repairs” as the reason for the disruption, with affected residents told to check back after 7:30 PM for more information.
The combined outages have left approximately 1,276 properties without electricity across the greater Launceston area.
