Premier says ‘love of entire state’ is with family of officer killed in shooting

Tasmania’s premier has rallied behind the state’s police force after an officer was fatally shot during a routine call in the state’s north-west this morning.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Police Minister Felix Ellis have expressed “heartfelt condolences” following the North Motton incident, where a police officer died after allegedly being shot by a member of the public.

“It is with the deepest sadness that a Tasmania Police officer has lost their life in a tragic shooting in the western district,” Rockliff said.

The Premier offered the state’s solidarity to those affected.

“To everyone who had the honour of knowing this officer, the love of an entire state is with you,” he said.

“The Tasmanian Government stands ready to provide every possible support and resource to those affected as we come to grips with this heartbreaking tragedy together.”

Police Minister Felix Ellis described the shooting as devastating for the broader community.

“Today is a dark day for our police force and wider community,” Ellis said.

“Tasmania Police is a family and this sends shockwaves right through our community.”

“Many will be hurting today and I encourage those impacted to seek support.”

The shooting occurred shortly after 11am when police attended a residential property for routine duties.

The alleged shooter surrendered after another officer discharged their firearm.

Police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
