An investigation has been launched after it was discovered that an IT system used by the Glenorchy City Council had been compromised, Mayor Sue Hickey has confirmed.
The council was alerted to the breach, which occurred in a system provided by an “external vendor”, on Thursday last week.
Details about the system and nature of the breach remain undisclosed.
Hickey said there is currently no evidence to suggest that council or ratepayer information has been accessed.
“This unauthorised activity was detected by council’s IT security systems, immediately triggering an investigation under our established protocols,” she said.
“We are continuing to work with our specialist IT contractors and the vendor as part of the ongoing investigation.”
The affected system has since been “isolated” to “further prevent unauthorised activity attempts”.
“Council takes the security of its IT systems and the data it holds extremely seriously and this investigation is taking place as a matter of priority,” Hickey said.
