Queen Mary of Denmark will make a homecoming to Tasmania in March, with a royal procession through Salamanca understood to be planned as part of the historic visit.

It will be the first official state visit to Australia by the Danish royals in more than a decade.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the King and Queen of Denmark will be in the country from March 14 to 19.

They will visit the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania during their six-day visit.

The Danish Royal Family shared this picture of Mary and Frederik with their children in Hobart in December 2022

“Denmark and Australia are great friends and together we are working to build a more sustainable, secure and peaceful future,” Albanese said.

“This visit is an opportunity to deepen our cooperation across a number of shared interests such as sustainability, renewable energy and innovation.”

The prime minister had hinted at the visit during a radio interview last week.

“Queen Mary is coming here,” he said. “… It’s very exciting. It’s Queen Mary and King Frederik.”

It remains unclear whether any of the couple’s four children – Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine – will join them.

The visit will mark a significant milestone for the Hobart-born Queen, who grew up in Tasmania before meeting Frederik at a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympics.

Mary attended Taroona High School and Hobart College before graduating from the University of Tasmania with commerce and law degrees in 1995.

She became the world’s first Australian-born queen when Frederik ascended to the throne in January 2024.

The couple’s last official Australian visit was in 2013, when they were still Crown Prince and Crown Princess.

That trip included celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House.

Queen Mary most recently visited Tasmania in February 2025, when she was spotted browsing Salamanca Market.

She also returned in October 2024 for her niece’s wedding at Frogmore Creek Winery in the Coal River Valley.

Her father John Donaldson and sisters Jane Stephens and Patricia Bailey still live in Tasmania.
