Former Tasmanian Labor leader Rebecca White has been confirmed as the party’s candidate for the marginal federal seat of Lyons.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement during a visit to Sorell on Tuesday.
White, who currently sits in the Tasmanian Parliament, has been tipped as a potential candidate for the seat previously held by Brian Mitchell.
Mitchell, who has held the seat three times, has publicly supported White’s candidacy and indicated he would step aside if she decided to run.
The Prime Minister’s announcement comes just days after federal opposition leader Peter Dutton nominated Susie Bower as the Liberal candidate for the seat.
White’s decision to run for the federal seat means she will have to resign from the state parliament, triggering a recount.
