Hobart Airport has reached new heights with a record-breaking 277,000 passengers travelling through the terminal in December.
Airport Chief Operating Officer Matt Cocker said the new December 2024 record breaks the previous record of 271,154 set in December 2019.
“It’s been a sizzling start to summer,” he said.
“That’s an increase of around 6,000 passengers and more than a two-percent jump on our previous December record set five years ago.”
Cocker said the airport is also on track to break the January record, with strong numbers in the first week of the month.
“Across the traditional peak period from December 20 to January 6, we’ve exceeded 180,000 passengers. That’s well above last year’s figures of 165,454 passengers and has smashed the previous record of 174,985 set in 2019/20,” he said.
“It’s clear that Tasmania is a hot-ticket location to visit for summer holidays and Hobart Airport is the most popular gateway to our great state.”
The airport is currently undergoing a $200 million terminal expansion and a $130 million runway upgrade project.
“We’re really proud to have hit these new heights while at the same time delivering on two major infrastructure projects,” Cocker said.
“I also want to thank travellers, our staff and volunteers for doing everything they can to ensure everyone’s holidays started and ended with smooth arrivals and departures.”
A temporary summer shutdown of night works on the runway have now come to an end, meaning the runway will now once again be closed between 10pm and 6am while significant upgrades take place.
