The winning bidders, Lachlan and Maryanne McKenzie from Victoria, said U15 “has created quite a stir in the Australian Angus community”.

“When his genomic data came through, he possessed a near impeccable data set,” said vendor Jock Hughes, who runs Cluden Newry’s ‘Jessiefield’ stud at Longford.

The bidding started at $6,000 and escalated by $2,000 increments over four bids before jumping from $14,000 to $100,000.

The total bidding time ran for seven minutes before the bull was knocked down for $275,000.

The sale smashed the state’s previous record of $240,000.

Hughes said the rest of the sale averaged only just over $8,000, making this bull’s sale very special.
