Tasmania’s top container recyclers are being called on to share their stories as the state’s four-month-old refund scheme continues to break records.

Local ambassador David Foster has teamed up with Recycle Rewards to track down “container champions” – the locals who have returned thousands of drink containers since the scheme launched.

“We know there are Tasmanians out there who are doing a legendary job at returning many thousands of containers,” Foster said.

Anonymised data shows the top three returners in Tasmania have clocked up impressive numbers – 28,090, 17,150 and 16,856 containers each.

At 10 cents each, that equates to $2,809.00, $1,715.00 and $1,685.60 respectively.

“These are incredible results given Recycle Rewards is just four months old,” Foster said.

“It’s what has helped make Tasmania the fastest growing container refund scheme in the country.”

The program is keen to celebrate its recycling heroes – from school groups raising funds to community clubs and everyday Tasmanians doing their bit for the planet.

“If you can see that these are your return numbers in the Recycle Rewards app or if you’ve also returned thousands of containers, please contact the team,” Foster said.

Collectively Tasmanians are returning more than 240,000 containers daily, with over 36 million already processed.

The south leads the way with 17 million returns, followed by the north on 10 million and the north-west with 8 million.

Aluminium cans dominate the count at 62%, with plastics making up 21%, glass 15% and other materials 2%.

More than 500 donation partners have signed up so far, including charities, community groups, sporting organisations and schools.

Anyone who thinks they’re a container champion can email Recycle Rewards or contact them through Facebook and Instagram.

They are being asked to share who they are, where they collect, how many containers they’ve returned and why they recycle.
