Motorists are facing delays on South Arm Road after a recycling collection truck was forced to eject its “hot load” near the Iron Pot Golf Club.

Emergency services are responding to the incident at South Arm, where police say the burning waste has created considerable smoke in the area.

Drivers urged to slow down and exercise caution when travelling through the affected area.

According to Clarence Council, the truck driver detected the fire in the collected recyclables and ejected the contents at the first safe location.

The cause is believed to likely be a battery that was improperly disposed of in a recycling bin.

There have been no reports of injuries from the incident.

Authorities have confirmed cleanup operations will commence once the area is deemed safe, with the council currently liaising with the Department of State Growth to coordinate efforts since the load was ejected onto a state highway.
