A police operation in central Hobart has caught out dozens of motorists, with officers expressing concern over the number of drivers caught running red lights and using mobile phones behind the wheel.
The targeted operation, carried out on Wednesday, led to 37 infringements being issued for a range of offences.
Inspector Kathy Bennett said many drivers “appeared to push the limits” at traffic lights, particularly as they changed from orange to red.
“We remind all motorists that they have a brake pedal as well as an accelerator and the decision to rush through a changing light could have serious consequences,” she said.
Officers detected 22 drivers using mobile phones, 14 running red lights and one person not wearing a seatbelt during the sting.

Inspector Bennett said the focus was on dangerous behaviours known to contribute to serious crashes and fatalities on Tasmanian roads.
“We will continue conducting targeted operations to ensure motorists adhere to the law and prioritise safety,” she said.
“If you’re on the roads, please follow the road rules, and avoid distractions while behind the wheel.”
In Tasmania, running a red light attracts a $202 fine and three demerit points.
Using a mobile phone while driving will result in a $404 fine and three demerit points.
