Reported smoke sighting leads to aircraft search in Tasmania's Central Highlands

Emergency services have scoured the state’s Central Highlands after a member of the public reported seeing an aircraft they believed to be in distress.

The person told Tasmania Police they saw smoke coming from the aircraft as it flew overhead near Elderslie on Monday night before it disappeared from view.

A search of the area near Bothwell involving both air and ground crews failed to find “anything of interest”, a police spokesperson told Pulse.

“The relevant authorities have advised there are no known aircraft unaccounted for.”

No evidence of missing aircraft after search triggered by smoke sighting

“Anyone with any further information should contact police on 131 444 and quote ESCAD 320-12082024.”

The Tasmania Fire Service said crews on the ground only came across a landowner conducting a burn off near the search area, which is thought to be unrelated.

Locals believe the sighting may have instead been a shooting star or meteor.
