After being hidden for nearly 50 years, Hobart’s historic His Majesty’s Theatre is undergoing a remarkable transformation.

The recent removal of iron sheeting revealed the Liverpool Street theatre’s original facade, capturing the attention of people across Tasmania and Australia.

Opened in 1911 with a production of “The Runaway Girl,” the theatre served as a beloved venue for live performances for decades.

Historical records show it transitioned to cinema use under Spencer’s Pictures in 1912 before becoming part of the Union Theatres chain in 1919.

Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Bug House’, the theatre closed its doors in 1961 and was converted into a clothing store by 1970.

Responding to the overwhelming public interest, the building’s owners say they plan to restore the facade ‘as close to its original features as possible’.

So far, the restoration project has included giving the building a fresh coat of paint, bringing it closer to its original appearance.
