After the closure of the Horseshoe Inn in May, its new owners have unveiled their first plans for the iconic Cambridge landmark.

Following the sale of the 200-year-old Inn by former owners Matt McAllister and Jo Mulcahy, the new Tasmanian owners, Young Group, have recently lodged plans with the Clarence City Council – revealing that a cafe may be the next major addition to the site.

“The site previously operating as the Horseshoe Inn is being redeveloped with the first stage being the conversion of the hotel building for a café and offices,” the planning application reads.

“The building is proposed to be converted to use as a café and offices for the Young Group. The café will utilise the area previously used as the bar and also the existing outdoor area.”

The application notes that “minor alterations” will be necessary to adapt the existing building and proposes cafe opening hours of 5:30am to 9pm on weekdays and 7am to 9pm on weekends.

Interior renovations at the Inn will include the installation of new stair handrails and barriers, some new sliding doors, window glazing and toilet partitions.

Potential future stages of the $20 million development on the 4,800+ sqm site may include housing, which Managing Director Trent Young says would be ‘developed in an architecturally considered way’.

He says the heritage of the Inn will feature throughout the redevelopment of the site and that the existing buildings would ‘be celebrated and not demolished’.

The application is currently out for consultation with the Clarence City Council until November 22, 2023.
