Burger lovers in Hobart are set to have a new option to sink their teeth into, with national chain Grill’d set to open their first store in the state, as revealed by Pulse in August.
Pulse can now reveal the Melbourne-based company will take over the former Lizzie and Lefroy space on Elizabeth Street in North Hobart, which closed late last month.
It will join other local offerings like Burger Haus and Boss Burger, chains such as Nandos and Subway and a variety of other restaurants.
A planning application submitted to the City of Hobart by Grill’d reveals the store will operate from 11am to 11pm daily and include a complete interior fit-out.
According to the documents, the proposed renovations aim to “complement” the building’s architectural design and be “sympathetic to the character of the local area”.
Grill’d has faced criticism from the United Workers Union (UWU) in recent weeks, with members accusing the company of underpaying employees through traineeship programs, some as little as $14.90 per hour for years.
The company says that ‘only 12’ of its more than 4,500 employees ‘are known to be union members’ and that it was working through a proposed new enterprise agreement.
Grill’d operates 172 outlets across the country and has an estimated worth of around $450 million.
