Cricket legend Ricky Ponting has become the first person to tee off on Country Club Tasmania’s new championship golf course, testing the initial nine holes with a group of sporting stars and VIP golfers.
The former Australian captain played the completed holes as part of a preview event for the $20 million golf precinct development in Launceston.
The full 18-hole course is set to open in summer 2027 and will become the centrepiece of the Prospect Vale resort’s expanded facilities.
“Playing the first nine holes for the very first time was just extraordinary,” Ponting said.

“I can now visualise exactly what this magnificent facility is going to be.”
The Tasmanian and passionate golfer said the course would offer something unique for the state.

“It’s beautifully shaped, challenging in all the right ways and built to a championship standard,” he said.
Designed by acclaimed architect Robin Gibson, the course draws inspiration from iconic layouts across North America and the UK while celebrating Tasmania’s natural landscape.
The parkland-style design features mature trees, stone bridges, lakes and creeks throughout the course.
Head of Golf Bryce Gorham said the preview showed the course was delivering on the team’s vision.

“Watching Ricky and his guests test out the first half of the course showed just how engaging these holes really are,” Gorham said.
“Robin and the team have created a design that rewards strategy and precision. Every shot matters, and every hole offers something memorable.”
Country Club opened its new The Range site in July, featuring eight driving bays across two levels, TopTracer technology, an 18-hole mini golf course and clubhouse restaurant.
