The Northern Midlands Council is taking action to address a recent surge in vandalism that has caused thousands of dollars in damage across the municipality.

At a council meeting on Monday, Councillor Richard Goss said he had seen “a lot” of vandalism in recent times.

Figures presented to the council revealed repair and cleaning costs have already reached $28,800 this financial year.

January was particularly costly, with $5,100 spent repairing vandalised public toilets in Longford, Perth, Ross and Cressy.

“I know our workforce and our managers must be getting a little bit disgusted about what’s happening around our community,” Goss said.

“Not just in one town, it’s right across the community.”

In response, the council has invited local police to an upcoming workshop to discuss strategies for preventing further vandalism.

Council staff are also providing police with surveillance footage of the incidents, which, in several cases, clearly identifies the perpetrators.
