Rock climber dies after 20-metre fall at southern Tasmania cliff

A man has died after falling about 20 metres while rock climbing in southern Tasmania.

Emergency services were called to Sand River in Buckland around 1:20pm on Tuesday following reports a climber had fallen from a cliff.

Tasmania Police said the 31-year-old French national had been climbing with a friend when he fell.

The man, who had been living in Victoria, was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition.

He died a short time later from his injuries.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, police said.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time,” police said.
