The state government will formally reject a substantial pay increase for state politicians that would have boosted parliamentary salaries by more than $30,000.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff has tabled a motion to disallow a determination by the Tasmanian Industrial Commission that recommended a 22% salary increase for MPs.
The proposed pay rise would have increased the base salary for Tasmanian parliamentarians from $140,185 to $171,527, the first adjustment to politicians’ pay packets since 2018.
Rockliff said the recommended increase was inappropriate in the current economic climate.

“The Tasmanian Industrial Commission’s proposed salary increase for Members of Parliament is out of step with community expectations,” Rockliff said.
“As I have previously said, we will not be accepting the increase as recommended. A disallowance motion has been tabled and will be dealt with this week.”

The motion must pass both houses of parliament to prevent the pay rise from taking effect.
