Glenorchy City Council has elected Russell Yaxley as its new deputy mayor.
Yaxley won a majority of votes from elected members at a council meeting on Monday night.
He said he was “excited” about the opportunity the role will provide him to continue promoting the interests and ideas of the Glenorchy community.
“I am fiercely passionate about this community and look forward to representing its residents and ratepayers as deputy mayor,” he said.
Mayor Sue Hickey congratulated Yaxley on his elevation to the deputy mayor’s role.
“The strength of this council is that we take a team approach to the issues that are important to our community and work hard with other levels of government to deliver results,” she said.
“I know that Alderman Yaxley enshrines that work ethic and I look forward to working with him to continue building our community.”
Yaxley unsuccessfully ran for mayor in the recent local government elections, finishing 2,310 final votes behind Hickey.
He said at the time that he wanted to move Glenorchy forward.
“In every challenge Glenorchy faces, there is opportunity to not only overcome it, but to thrive and grow and it’s my hope to build a city through action, results and accountability that is proud and progressive,” he said during the campaign.
“My message is clear. Glenorchy’s best days are ahead and I am asking the people of this great city for the opportunity to move Glenorchy forward, together.”
