A number of fire trucks and other vehicles equipped to tackle bushfires have been taken out of service after “a series of malicious acts”.
Sustainable Timber Tasmania, one of the state’s key firefighting agencies, say its fleet kept at both Hobart and Derwent Park has been tampered with in recent weeks.
“Regardless of opinions on forestry, trespassing and tampering with property is never acceptable,” an STT spokesperson said.
“The safety and security of our employees is our top priority and these actions pose a direct threat to both.”
CCTV footage of those alleged to be responsible has been shared with Tasmania Police and a criminal investigation is underway.
“This disruption not only affects our operations but also impacts the broader community,” STT said.
“Our fleet is vital to Tasmania’s firefighting efforts and must always be ready to respond quickly during fire season.”
“The availability of these vehicles is crucial for protecting our communities and forests.”
Minister Eric Abetz said the incidents were “concerning” and said activist groups must speak out in opposition of such attacks.
“This type of behaviour must be condemned,” he said.
Greens Leader Rosalie Woodruff took to X to also call the act “unacceptable”.
“Having our full firefighting fleet able to respond to an incident at any time is essential. I’m sure the police are investigating and we urge anyone with information to come forward,” she said.
