Brian Mitchell has announced he will step down as the Labor MP for Lyons at the next federal election.
The former journalist has held the seat, one of the most marginal in Australia, for three consecutive terms since 2016.
Mitchell said he was “saddened” to leave but backed former state Labor leader Rebecca White to take his place.
“Rebecca White is a terrific choice. Tough, smart, experienced and hard-working, Rebecca will work hard to ensure Labor retains the seat of Lyons,” he said.
“Rebecca is a once-in-a-generation talent and will be a terrific representative for regional Tasmania in Canberra.”
He said he has “loved” his job for the past eight and a half years and will continue to work for Lyons until the election.
“I’d like to thank the electors of Lyons for putting their trust in me for the past eight and a half years. I’ve never taken even one day for granted,” he said.
“Locally, since I’ve been the Member for Lyons plenty of things have been built and services delivered and funded.”
“I’m especially proud that every single promise I’ve made has been kept.”
“My apologies to my wife for the fact it looks like I’ll now be spending more time at home than she’s used to,” he said.
Speaking alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday, White said she was honoured to be endorsed.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to represent our community at the highest level and feel incredibly humbled by the support I have received,” she said.
“There are no guarantees in politics and I am putting my hand up knowing that this campaign will require a huge amount of effort.”
“Together I believe that we can win the seat of Lyons but I need your help.”
