The Department of State Growth is warning of a fake Facebook page that falsely offers people the chance to apply for their licence online.

The scam, which targets unsuspecting social media users, went live on March 18 and has seemingly hooked several aspiring drivers.

“I’m interested with tasmanian drivers licence [sic],” one person said, while another asked: “i want to get my motorbike licence again, i held one 1981 but i let it laps [sic], i have full heavy vehicle licence since 80s, do i re sit it?”

State Growth say they will never offer driver licences or ask for personal information or payments through Facebook.

“Please be careful to only use official government websites for government transactions like getting your driver licence and do not share your personal information with anyone on Facebook,” a spokesperson warned.

“We have alerted Facebook to this fake account and requested it be removed and have reported the matter to police.”

Official licences can be acquired through the transport.tas.gov.au website or by visiting Service Tasmania.
