A seal has been caught napping on the bow of a Spirit of Tasmania ferry as it pulled out of the Geelong port.
A family of travellers spotted the unexpected passenger lounging on the bulbous bow of the Spirit of Tasmania IV this week.
The Vanderwerff’s, from Broome in WA, have been travelling around Australia for the past two years and were preparing to board the ferry for a Tasmanian holiday.
As they waited in the queue, they noticed the seal sunbaking on the protruding structure beneath the waterline.

The animal appeared completely unbothered by the ship’s movement, barely stirring except to briefly lift its head.
The family captured footage of the seal holding its position as the ferry reversed out of the dock and shared it to their Facebook page.

It remains unclear how long the seal stayed aboard or when it eventually slipped back into the water.
