Police are hoping the passage of time may lead to new clues in the disappearance of a Tasmanian man last seen at Lake Sorell three decades age.
Ian David Nichols was 51-years-old when he went missing from the Dago Point area of Lake Sorell near Interlaken on September 14, 1989.
At the time, Nichols was part of a group working on the construction of a retreat at the lake.
The group returned to Hobart on the day of Nichols’ disappearance while he remained at the site, where he was last seen.
A 2012 coronial investigation presumed Nichols deceased and estimated his death occurred sometime around September 18, 1989.
Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Bowden said investigations are yet to locate any trace of Nichols’ whereabouts.
“We don’t have clear answers … it could have been misadventure, it could have been as a result of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” he said.
“Understandably, Ian’s disappearance was traumatic for his family and loved ones.”
“Families always deserve answers to what happened to their loved ones, and we owe it to them to find those answers.”
Bowden said Nichols will remain listed as a missing person and the investigation will stay open until answers are found.
“If you know anything about what happened to Ian, even if you think it may be insignificant, I ask you to come forward,” he said.
