A seasonal beachfront is on the cards for Sandy Bay’s Long Beach.
The Hobart City Council will launch an expression of interest process next month, inviting businesses to open and run a small facility at one of Hobart’s most popular beaches.
The proposed operation would run during the cooler months from April to October, with all facilities to be removed during the summer season.
“This opportunity follows numerous business requests to operate a sauna on council land and the demonstrated success of similar experiences across Tasmania,” council documents state.

“This initiative aims to provide beachgoers with a unique, low-impact health and wellbeing experience that complements the natural surroundings.”
Long Beach was chosen as it offered the “only suitable location within the local government area”, the council said.

The move follows a growing trend of beachside saunas in Tasmania, with the Kingborough Council recently approving plans for a mobile sauna at nearby Taroona Beach.
Similar mobile wellness facilities have already proven popular in the state’s north.
