Damaging and locally destructive winds are forecast to lash Tasmania this week as a cold front approaches, bringing wet weather with it.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the entire island, with peak gusts of around 100km/h expected in northern regions from late Tuesday morning.
In western, southern and eastern areas, winds are likely to be even stronger, averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts of around 110km/h.
The Bureau warns that “locally destructive northwesterly winds” averaging 60 to 80km/h with peak gusts in excess of 125km/h are possible over elevated terrain and parts of the East Coast between Swansea and Orford from late Tuesday morning.
The State Emergency Service advises people to supervise children closely, check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings, manage pets and livestock, secure outdoor items and be prepared for power outages.
“Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving,” the SES says.
The winds are expected to ease in southern and eastern areas overnight on Tuesday as the cold front passes, with only damaging westerly winds likely to continue along the western and northern coasts into Wednesday.
