Severe weather warning as 100km/h wind gusts lash Tasmania

Parts of Tasmania’s north and east coasts are being lashed by damaging winds this morning as a cold front sweeps across the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds, with gusts reaching up to 100km/h possible.

The strongest winds are currently affecting elevated areas, with gusts over 110km/h possible.

The cold front is moving from the state’s south-west towards the north-east and is expected to reach the north-east coast by late afternoon.

“Damaging wind gusts of around 100km/h are possible in showers on and ahead of the cold front,” the Bureau said.

“Winds are expected to ease late afternoon.”

Areas that may be impacted include Scottsdale, Whitemark, St Helens, Swansea, Bicheno and Fingal.

A 106km/h wind gust was recorded at Larapuna at 9:25am and sustained 65km/h winds have been present since 8:30am.

A 139km/h gust was also recorded at the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington at 7:24am.
