The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds expected to hit much of the state’s central, southern and eastern regions from Sunday.
Strong northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with damaging gusts of around 100 km/h are forecast to develop ahead of an approaching cold front, with Hobart residents among those in the firing line.
The warning, issued Saturday afternoon, covers the Upper Derwent Valley, South East, East Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of Western and North East Forecast Districts.
Higher terrain and southern coastal areas may experience even more severe conditions, with winds potentially averaging 60 to 70 km/h and gusts reaching up to 110 km/h.

The BOM says the peak windy conditions will likely occur from late Sunday morning until mid-afternoon, with some areas experiencing challenging conditions into Sunday night.
“Conditions should ease over central and eastern Tasmania by early evening, but may persist about the south and across higher terrain into Sunday night,” the Bureau stated.

Locations potentially affected include Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Oatlands, Bicheno and Orford.
The State Emergency Service has advised people to take precautions including securing outdoor furniture, preparing for potential power outages, and keeping children and pets supervised.
Those in affected areas are urged to report power outages to TasNetworks on 132 004 and to contact the SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance.
People should also be cautious of potential hazards from damaged trees and power lines, particularly when driving.
