A young boy has been captured on national television briefly handling a shark at Bellerive, just metres away from where a Big Bash League cricket match was being played.

Fox Cricket broadcast the unusual scene during their coverage of the Hobart Hurricanes vs Adelaide Strikers match at Ninja Stadium this evening.

The footage showed the group, appearing to be a family, near the shoreline rocks adjacent to the stadium.

The young boy held up what appeared to be a live shark before returning it to the water, unaware the ordeal was caught by television cameras.

Fox Cricket commentators were surprised as they watched on.

“She’s decent size,” one commentator said.

“Get that hand away, champ,” another commentator warned as the boy posed with the shark.

The commentary team continued to observe the ordeal as boy pushed the shark back into the water.

“That’s gutsy, I don’t know if I can do that.”
