Work has started on the $12 million Silverdome redevelopment, with local Launceston firm Beardwood appointed as the head contractor for the upgrade.
The upgrade will transform one of Northern Tasmania’s most iconic sporting venues, adding a new multi-purpose floor, more seating, improved hospitality facilities and a dedicated function space.
Sport Minister Nick Duigan said the redevelopment would deliver better facilities for both elite and community sport.
“The redevelopment will attract more events and deliver greater usage at both the elite and community level,” he said.

Stadiums Tasmania CEO James Avery said the project remained on track to be completed by October this year.
“These upgrades will help usher in a new era for the Silverdome by introducing contemporary elements that improve the user and patron experience,” he said.

The venue’s capacity will increase from just over 3,000 to close to 4,000 following the redevelopment.
Avery said the upgraded facility would secure the long-term future of key events including the Tasmania JackJumpers’ two annual home games, with potential for more games.
“We would expect to see the Jewels, the new WNBL side, playing here as well,” Duigan said.
Beardwood director Ash Beardwood said the local company was proud to lead the project.

“We are committed to delivering these high-quality facilities on time for the community,” he said.
The redevelopment also includes a corporate hospitality facility and bar to attract a greater variety of events including concerts, trade shows and conferences.
