A huge dumping of snow has blanketed parts of Tasmania, including the Mount Mawson ski field just an hour and a half from Hobart.
The snow has transformed the mountain into a winter wonderland, with a webcam overlooking the resort showing a thick layer of white covering the slopes.
According to Peter Davis from the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association, the snow has created the perfect conditions for skiing.
“It’s certainly a pretty unique experience because with global warming, we can never know when we’re going to get a good snowfall,” he told Local Radio.
The ski tows are set to run this weekend, with the roads to the mountain open to four-wheel-drive vehicles only.
The walk to the ski field from the Lake Dobson car park in Mt Field National Park takes around 30 to 60 minutes, with a day shelter at the top to provide toilets and water.
Davis said volunteers from the Mount Mawson Ski Patrol and the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association will be on hand this weekend to ensure the safety of visitors.
“They have to make sure the ski field is safe and then they patrol it and make sure no one gets into trouble,” he said.
Meanwhile in Tasmania’s north, Ben Lomond National Park has also reopened to the public.
The resort has a snow depth of around 40 centimetres and spent Monday and Tuesday making snow to ensure coverage until the end of September.
