As students head back to school, Tasmanian drivers are being reminded of the importance of slowing down in school zones to keep young pedestrians safe.

The ‘Love 40’ campaign, launched by the Road Safety Advisory Council, features a love heart replacing the red circle around the speed limit signs and aims to educate drivers about the need for extra caution in and around schools and school buses.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, spoke about the campaign, saying, “Young children are still developing their understanding of roads, cars, and how to cross safely, making them more vulnerable as road users.

“This means that as drivers, we must take extra care and be more vigilant to ensure their safety.”

The ‘Love 40’ campaign is entering its fifth year, and while most drivers are getting the message, it only takes one driver to ignore the rules and cause a tragedy.

Speed cameras will be monitoring school zones, and fines up to $1,041 will be issued to those caught speeding.

The fines may also include demerit points, depending on the severity of the offense.

By following the ‘Love 40’ campaign, drivers can help create a safer road environment for everyone.
