A retiree from Smithton in Tasmania’s far north-west has ended the mystery surrounding the weekend’s $3.75 million lotto win.
The man was one of eight division one winners across the country in Saturday’s TattsLotto draw, including a syndicate from Hobart.
A spokesperson for The Lott said the man thought he was ‘in trouble’ when staff at his local newsagency asked him to step into a private room.
He was left speechless when an official confirmed his prize over the phone.
“Oh my God!” he said. “Thank you so much. I’m so happy. I can’t say anything… [I’m] lost for words.”
His son said the win, which will be a “huge help for the family”, had left his father “mute”.
“He came into the local newsagency to put on his usual tickets, and he decided to check his old ticket while he was here,” he said.
“I then received a random call from him and he said to me “I won the Lotto! Come down to the store and I’ll show you!””
Smithton Newsagency owner Paul Bramich said he “couldn’t be more excited” to have sold the winning ticket.
“We sold our last division one winning entry about seven or eight years ago, so this is an exciting time for us,” he said.
“We’re located in a small tight-knit community and we just know this winning news would make a lot of people happy.”
The winning numbers in draw 4481 on June 29 were 30, 24, 44, 21, 45 and 10. The supplementary numbers were 31 and 28.
