A working smoke alarm has been credited with potentially saving lives after a house fire broke out in the Launceston suburb of Mowbray late last night.
Emergency crews responded to the Clark Street property around 11:10pm after residents were woken by their smoke alarm activating.
Three Tasmania Fire Service crews from Rocherlea and Launceston, including both career and volunteer firefighters, arrived to find the home engulfed in smoke and flames.
Firefighters worked alongside police to evacuate neighbouring properties as a precaution, with authorities also issuing a smoke alert for surrounding areas.

TFS Station Officer Roger Brown praised the family’s smoke alarm for ensuring their safe escape.
“This incident highlights the critical importance of having working smoke alarms installed in every home,” he said.

“Quite simply, they save lives. We urge everyone to check their smoke alarms regularly to protect themselves and their families.”
The family initially feared their pet cat had perished in the blaze, but Brown confirmed the animal has since returned home safely.
While the property sustained significant damage in the fire, no injuries were reported.
Fire investigators have determined the blaze was accidental, but investigations are continuing.
