A fire at the Barretta Waste and Recycling Centre has forced the closure of its transfer station, with authorities expecting disruptions to last for several days.

Fire crews from Kingston, Margate and Snug responded to the blaze at the Channel Highway facility at around 4:30pm on Sunday.

“The fire was caused by smouldering materials being discarded in the waste transfer station,” a Tasmania Fire Service spokesperson said.

Kingborough Council says the transfer station will stay closed while damage is assessed and safety checks are carried out.

The closure is likely to remain in place for several days.

Despite the shutdown of the transfer station, other parts of the facility are still open.

The green waste and recycling drop-off areas are accessible, along with the Reuse Shop.

“Council thanks emergency services for their quick and effective response which has minimised the damage to the facility,” the council said.
