Snow is blanketing parts of Tasmania’s West Coast today as a cold front sweeps across the state, prompting police to warn motorists to take extra care on the roads.
The Bureau of Meteorology had predicted snow above 500 metres across southern and central Tasmania, with the west coast town of Waratah among the spots seeing steady falls.
Local resident Dan Fell snapped a photo of a snow-covered road in the region, showing thick flakes coming down and visibility dropping fast.
Tasmania Police are warning drivers in the area to exercise “extreme caution” on the roads.
“Take it slow, obey any road closures or warning signs about hazardous conditions, put your headlights on if visibility is poor and leave plenty of space between vehicles,” police said.

Road warnings are in place for several routes, including Lake Dobson Road, which has an “extreme caution” alert for light snow.
The Lyell Highway between Mt Arrowsmith and King William Bridge is also flagged for snow hazards, while sections of the Marlborough and Midland Highways remain under caution due to patchy ice.
According to the bureau, a freshening north-westerly airstream is pushing through ahead of the cold front, with showers expected to ease and pull back to the west and far south by this evening.
Snow is likely to keep falling to around 900 metres on Thursday morning, especially in the west and far south, before conditions slowly improve later in the week.
