The road to the summit of Hobart’s kunanyi/Mt Wellington has been closed by forecast snow and ice this morning, as flurries fall across Tasmania’s southern highlands.
The Hobart City Council shut the Springs section at 6pm on Sunday as a pre-emptive measure.
Current conditions show Hobart sitting at 4.3 degrees, though it feels like minus 1.1 with the wind chill.
Snow has been falling to near 500 metres across southern areas this morning, driven by a cold southerly airstream sweeping across the state.

Mount Nelson residents reported actual snowfall this morning, with some catching flakes in bowls.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the cold snap is being caused by a southerly airstream, with a high pressure system to the west slowly approaching.

Showers are affecting the south and east, while other areas remain mainly fine with southerly winds.
The high centre will move over Tasmania tomorrow, bringing fine conditions with mostly light winds and afternoon sea breezes.
Wednesday should continue the improvement, with fine weather and light winds expected.
By Thursday, fine conditions will dominate apart from isolated light showers about the eastern ranges.
