The conditions have forced police to issue a warning for ice and snow on Belvoir Road & Dove Lake Road at Cradle Mountain and on the West Coast’s Murchison Highway, causing potential traffic hazards.

Authorities say works to clear the roads of snow are underway.

The BOM is forecasting showers about western, southern and central areas this morning, gradually decreasing throughout the day.

Snowfalls are expected to rise to around 1100m about the higher peaks by the afternoon, while southwesterly winds will remain fresh at times.

The high is expected to move to the southwest of Tasmania on Thursday where it will remain through Friday and Saturday, with winds tending southeasterly on Saturday as a low pressure system deepens over the Tasman Sea.

Showers about the state’s west and far south are expected on Thursday, falling as snow about the higher peaks, with areas of morning frost.
