Southern Cross Care Tasmania has put the site of the former Mary’s Grange Nursing Home in Taroona up for sale.

Mary’s Grange has been vacant since 2021 after residents were “relocated to handpicked new homes” as part of a review of operations undertaken by the aged-care provider.

Southern Cross Chair Judith Fishlock said now was the right time to sell the site, which has become a hotspot for anti-social behaviour in recent years.

“The Mary’s Grange site has operated as an aged care facility since 1957 and Southern Cross Care took over in 2016,” Fishlock said.

“Since residents vacated the site, the empty buildings have been targeted by senseless illegal entry and vandalism.”

“This has negatively impacted the community, especially those who live close by on Grange Avenue as well as causing ongoing security issues.”

The Knight Frank property listing describes the 1.05-hectare site as a “significant asset and landholding in a premium suburb”.

According to the listing agents, there are multiple possibilities for the site’s development.

One of the options, pending the necessary approvals, could include demolishing the existing structures and subdividing the land into around a dozen lots or townhouses.

The property is available for sale through expressions of interest, with the deadline set for early May.
