Speed cameras on two Hobart bridges have dished out almost 7,000 fines worth more than $870,000 in just six months, new figures show.

The new Bridgewater Bridge nabbed 988 drivers in August alone, after a two-month grace period ended, pulling in $132,276 in fines.

The Bridgewater Bridge cameras have been operating since the bridge opened in June, with fines starting from August 1.

June proved the worst month for Tasman Bridge speeders, with 1,150 drivers fined a total of $138,744. 840 fines were issued in August.

Running the Bridgewater Bridge camera costs about $6,754 a month to operate and maintain.

In August alone, it generated nearly 20 times that amount in fines.

Operating costs for the Tasman Bridge camera system couldn’t be separated, as enforcement is handled under a managed service model that also covers mobile speed camera operations across Tasmania.

A Department of State Growth spokesperson said both bridges “only have speed enforcement camera systems installed”.

Other fixed speed cameras around the state are also managed by State Growth, but there are no current plans to replace them with newer technology, the department said.
