A large stretch of Illawarra Road into Longford will have its speed limit reduced following a crash history that has seen 42 reported incidents in just five years.

The Commissioner for Transport has approved lowering the speed limit from 100 km/h to 80 km/h along an approximately seven-kilometre section between the Midland Highway and about three kilometres north of Bishopsbourne Road.

Department of State Growth data revealed the road’s safety issues, with the 42 crashes between 2020 and 2024 resulting in four serious injuries, seven minor injuries, seven requiring first aid and 24 incidents causing property damage.

The new speed restrictions will take effect from next week, once new signage has been installed – weather permitting.

“A safer speed limit will reduce the risk of crashes and improve safety for all road users and people who live in the area,” a department spokesperson said.

The decision follows community concern about safety, particularly regarding vehicles entering and exiting Illawarra Road.

The 80 km/h limit will be reassessed as part of finalising design work for proposed safety upgrades planned for different sections of Illawarra Road.
