Spirit of Tasmania has announced that its two new vessels will feature dog-friendly cabins.

The new ships, set to launch in 2025, will each have 18 cabins dedicated to accommodating furry friends and their owners.

In addition to the cabins, the ferries will also have a secure, climate-controlled pet housing area with kennels for dogs of all breeds and sizes.

This area will be accessible only to crew members and pet owners, who will be able to unlock their dog’s kennel using new technology.

It will also be monitored by CCTV, allowing owners to visit their pets during the voyage between Geelong and Devonport and giving them peace of mind.

For those staying in pet-friendly cabins, a designated outdoor area will be available for dogs to stretch their legs and enjoy some fresh sea air on a lead.

Spirit of Tasmania chief executive Bernard Dwyer said the decision to add pet-friendly cabins was made in response to growing demand.

“We know that pets are cherished members of the family,” he said.

“We have observed high demand from passengers wanting to holiday with their pets, as many prefer to keep their furry companions with them instead of leaving them with pet sitters or at boarding kennels close to home.”

“We’re particularly proud of the new kennels. We’re confident that passengers will be able to relax and enjoy the sailing knowing that their pet is well taken care of in our new kennel area.”

Bookings for the pet cabins will open when the sailing schedule for the first of the ships is finalised.
