A review of kunanyi/Mount Wellington is one step closer to getting underway as the state government looks to create a long-term vision for the mountain.
The review will examine transport options to the summit, appropriate facilities and infrastructure, governance, funding and planning arrangements.
It will take place over the next 12 months and take feedback from the community and an array of stakeholders.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources Eric Abetz said kunanyi/Mount Wellington is currently “struggling” under increasing tourist numbers, with 410,000 making the trip up each year.
“The infrastructure on the mountain is ageing and outdated, meaning it is no longer suited to its purpose and that is something we need to look closely at,” he said.
“We recognise the importance of our natural visitor economy and the mountain is a critical part of this.”
“We need to make sure the mountain lives up to Tasmania’s reputation of quality experiences and maintains its place as one of our premier natural tourism attractions.”
The review comes after the mountain was closed to local and tourist traffic due to snow just last weekend, causing a major bottleneck of cars in the Fern Tree area.
According to the review’s terms of reference, its scope will encompass the mountain’s visual impact from the city and surrounding areas, Aboriginal cultural values and heritage, sustainable recreation opportunities and suitable facilities and infrastructure for visitors.
