As Kingston prepares for the construction of two new high-performance sporting facilities, likely upgrades to the area’s road infrastructure have been flagged.

The Tasmania Devils’ $70 million and JackJumpers’ $15 million home bases will be situated alongside one another in the Kingborough sports precinct.

Planning documents for the JackJumpers’ development suggest that the project is “not expected to have any noticeable impact on the safety and function of the surrounding road network”.

A traffic report indicates that the facility could generate up to 100 additional vehicle movements per day.

It notes that nearby intersections on Kingston View Drive and Summerleas Road are expected to “continue to operate well post-development and 10 years post-development”.

Potential traffic data for the Tasmania Devils’ high-performance centre is yet to be released.

Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt says the council is planning for the future of the precinct and its surrounding infrastructure, including a link between Spring Farm Road and the facilities on Kingston View Drive.

“The Spring Farm Road connection will form an important part of the overall precinct,” Wriedt told Pulse.

“As with all elements of the project, council will now work closely with the state government on the planning, funding and delivery of this important road connection.”

The connection would allow access to the recently approved $45 million Spring Farm Village shopping centre and avoid all traffic entering from Summerleas Road.

Sports Minister Nick Duigan agrees that road infrastructure will be a “pretty critical” aspect of both developments.

“Understanding what the traffic needs and the road needs are, given that we’ve located these two facilities here, is a key understanding of the DA approval,” he said.

“We’ll work with council to know and understand what those things are and what upgrades might be required to support them.”

“We know that this is going to be a great community sporting facility … the government is so proud to be investing upwards of $85 million into these two facilities here at Kingston at the Twin Ovals.”
