Ahead of Hobart-born Princess Mary’s coronation as Queen of Denmark, calls are growing for the creation of a public holiday to celebrate our ‘Tassie Queen’.
Nearly 200 Tasmanians have already joined a group in support of the holiday, putting forward Mary’s February 5 birthday as a potential date.
Group spokesperson Tori Hodgman says she doesn’t think Tasmanians are celebrating Mary’s crowning enough at the moment.
“Especially because it’s just an announcement on Sunday, there’s no dragging it down the main street in a big fancy crown or whatever. So I think there needs to be a lot of celebrating,” she told ABC Radio Hobart.
Despite the excitement, the State Government say they are “not considering” the idea of a public holiday for Mary.
“As a Government we are very, very excited by Tasmania’s own Crown Princess Mary’s upcoming coronation, to become Queen Mary of Denmark, and we welcome the fun and good spirit with which the request for the public holiday is made,” Acting Premier Michael Ferguson told Pulse.
“However, the Government is not considering the public holiday proposal”.
Ferguson says he will “have more to say” about a Tasmanian gift for the new Queen of Denmark soon.
Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is set to become the world’s first Australian-born queen on January 14 after Queen Margrethe II announced that she would abdicate.
Crown Prince Frederik, who married Tasmanian-born Mary in 2004, will succeed his mother as the new monarch.
