Storm front moving across Tasmania brings rain, thunderstorms and strong winds

A strong cold front sweeping across southeastern Australia is bringing rain, thunderstorms and strong winds to Tasmania this afternoon.

Thunderstorms are currently forming in the Central Highlands region, with dozens of lightning strikes already recorded on Friday afternoon.

The storms are expected to intensify into the evening and are likely to produce moderate to heavy rainfall, along with strong winds and hail.

As of 2:30pm, the BOM has only issued an official ‘Strong Wind Warning’ for the areas East of Flinders Island, Upper East Coast and Lower East Coast.

The BOM forecast for Friday includes showers that will develop around the west at noon and extend statewide in the afternoon and evening.

“Possible thunderstorms about the north. Northwesterly winds, tending south to southwesterly in the west and south in the late afternoon and evening,” the BOM say.

Saturday 9 December
Showers statewide, contracting to the northeast in the evening. South to southwesterly winds, tending southeasterly about the east coast.

Sunday 10 December
Light showers about the north. Fine elsewhere. Light winds with afternoon sea breezes.
