Strahan’s only manned service station has re-opened under new ownership following extensive upgrades and renovations.

Lowes Petroleum bought the Reid Street fuel outlet in 2023 and closed it for renovations, installing new above-ground fuel tanks and implementing new technology.

The upgrades took longer than expected, leaving locals reliant on an unmanned facility near the airport for fuel during the closure.

Local resident Michael Reid, whose family has a long history on the West Coast, continues to operate the station, offering mechanic services, convenience items and fishing tackle.

A spokesperson for Lowes Petroleum Tasmania said the “bigger, brighter and better” facility will benefit locals and tourists.

“The newly re-opened bp Strahan now offers improved facilities … including bp Unleaded, bp Ultimate 98 and Diesel,” they said.

The redevelopment was undertaken to meet environmental standards, including the removal of old underground tanks.

Reid said the wait for the upgraded service station was worth it and that it represents a step forward for the town’s development.
