A spectacular Aurora display has lit up Australia’s southern skies overnight, with Tasmania’s north offering some of the best views of the natural phenomenon.
The Aurora Australis painted the night sky with vibrant pink and green hues on Sunday night, flooding social media with images of the dazzling light show.
While northern Tasmanians enjoyed prime viewing conditions, those in the state’s south reported mixed experiences, with cloud cover diminishing visibility in many areas.
The rare event was visible to the naked eye as far north as Tamworth in New South Wales, where clear winter skies provided the perfect backdrop for the colourful display.

The light show was triggered by a geomagnetic storm that, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, is expected to continue for several days.
The phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with gases in Earth’s atmosphere, creating the distinctive coloured lights that are typically only visible in regions closer to the poles.
