Tasmania Zoo’s Sumatran tiger Jalur has died after a battle with a rare form of bone marrow cancer.

Critically endangered, Jaluar came to Tasmania Zoo from Auckland, New Zealand in 2018 and quickly became a staff favourite.

The zoo described Jaluar as a ‘big softie’ who was one of ‘Tasmania Zoo’s most majestic personalities’.

“The average life expectancy for a Sumatran Tiger in the wild is 12 years, so to reach 15 is a good milestone,” the Zoo said.

“Jalur played an important role in the Sumatran Tiger Breeding Program and was a conservation advocate for this critically endangered species.”

Despite being considered elderly, Jaluar remained active and in great condition until he was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis, a bone marrow cancer.

The decision was made to euthanise Jaluar as the cancer progressed aggressively.

Jaluar is survived by his sister Cinta.
