Brighton will get Sunday buses for the first time from next month.

From May 3, greater Hobart timetables will be rewritten to better reflect real travel times, following a year of performance data from Metro, Kinetic and Tassielink.

Urban Hobart run times have not been updated since the network launched in 2016.

The government says traffic and travel patterns have shifted, leaving buses regularly running late.

A total of 21 new Sunday services will run between Brighton and Bridgewater or Glenorchy, mirroring the Saturday timetable.

The move delivers on a 2024 election promise and brings Brighton into line with communities such as Sorell and New Norfolk.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent hopes the changes would give passengers more confidence in the network.

“This new Sunday service to Brighton recognises the high demand from this fast-growing region,” Vincent said.

“These updates are about making bus timetables more reliable and better aligned with real traffic conditions.”

Vincent said no services would be cut, with savings found elsewhere to cover the extra running time.

Extra minutes have also been added to some Metro school services that have been running late.

Metro Tasmania chief executive Jess Paton said reliability remained the operator’s focus.

“At Metro, our focus is on reliability and giving customers greater confidence in the services they rely on every day,” Paton said.

Some buses will depart earlier than they do now and a small number of transfer connections will change.

Passengers are urged to check new timetables before May 3 via the Metro website or app. Public transport remains free until June 30.

A broader review of routes and frequencies will go to public consultation later this year.
